If Earth Had Rings

First off, they would be really pretty to look at. They would also dominate the sky in both night and day at exactly the same place as they would never rise nor set. And at night you would see the Earth’s shadow swing across the rings, like in the 4th photo here.

However, life would be very different on Earth if this were the case. Nocturnal animals would have a hard time being nocturnal, as the light reflecting from the rings would illuminate the night.

Because we are closer to the Sun than Saturn is, the rings would be more rocky than ice, making them less bright but still pretty bright. In fact, you would see far less stars at night (living anywhere other than the equator or the arctic circle) because of the light pollution and not to mention ruin most meteor showers because of that.

During the day the rings would block sunlight in certain regions of the planet creating wild weather cycles and effecting plant life as well. So basically, they would be definitely pretty to look at but they would also make a whole lot of things screwy.

I teased this the other night, reminiscing about the time I wrote a Metamorpho story in which I called Neil Gaiman a dick (obviously I do not actually think Neil Gaiman is a dick; I’ve never met him. The reference is immediately relevant to the Sandman issue in which he killed Urania Blackwell, a supporting character from Metamorpho).

It was not a published story, obviously, but one I wrote three years ago for Nate Bellegarde’s birthday. He asked people to draw Metamorpho for him, and many artists came through for him.

I, however, do not draw, so I wrote him a story. I will post it here so you can read it. It features Metamorpho battling the forces of Black Manta and Dr Sivana. It is not in my typical script format, as I was writing it for humans to read, and not for an artist to turn into a page, so this isn’t a great model for someone learning to write comics, but hopefully it’s not a pain to read through.

Hector Plasm is an awesome comic by Benito Cereno and Nate Bellegarde, and it’s one of my favorite comics ever.

If you like good comics, you should read it. If you like good comics that are also about ghost stories, then this should be at the top of your list.

I need to draw something big and extravagant with this character, but this is what I have time for right now. If you want more, then go read the comic!

Have I told you how awesome Nate Bellegarde is? No? Well, he is awesome. Nate is the only artist I’ve ever purchased a commissioned piece of art from, and it, too, is awesome. I asked him to draw Grifter and Ladytron for me, and it’s hanging in a frame above my art desk with some other choice pieces of original art by the likes of Ross Campbell and Ryan Kelly.

So Nate Bellegarde is, of course, the artist/co-creator of Hector Plasm. Hector is a character that I really enjoy, but who doesn’t have nearly enough comics about him. If someone would pay Benito Cereno and Nate a bunch of money to write/draw a few volumes of Hector’s adventures, there is no doubt in my mind that he would rival John Constantine and Hellboy in the “weird, magical, badass, mythical, anti-hero comic character” genre. Seriously, he’s that awesome. One time he pulled an ectoplasmic six-shooter out of his throat and blew the shit out of a demon with it. What about that isn’t completely amazing?

Part of me wanted to produce a kind of iconic “full figure of the character standing in a badass pose” image of Hector, but the more rough sketches I drew of him staring down the viewer with his sword drawn, prepared to do battle with an unseen foe in various slightly different poses, the more I felt like that kind of shot didn’t suit his character. I mean, he certainly looks cool with his glowing green sword at the ready, but I eventually decided that where Hector Plasm is concerned, weirder is better.

Hence, Slimer’s deformed hillbilly cousin ejecting himself from within Hector’s gullet. Because these things happen from time to time.

As I write this, it’s 7:45 in the morning, which is why I didn’t go crazy with the colors, but as late/early as it is I couldn’t in good conscience just post the black and white version of this image. Without the mucous-y green/yellow combination, that puke monster just didn’t look gross enough. I actually flatted the entire image, but without shadows or highlights it looked even more incomplete than the straight black and white version, so I compromised and decided to go with the version you see above. I may do a full-color take of this piece at some point and post it here, but I intended to do the same with my Punk Storm piece last week and that has yet to happen, so I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Drawn on 8.5x11” bristol, inked with Pitt Pens, and…well, you read that last paragraph, right?

Hector Plasm week at the stock*pile blog. All of us at S*P are all huge fans of the works of one Nate Bellegarde. I actually have two sketches of hector that I got from Nate at cons over the last couple of years.

Inspiration for this piece came from my recent purchase of the amazing screw on head at my local comic shop and the old looking portrait Mignola does.

I’m running late so I’m dropping in this place holder. I’ll try and get this piece finished soon.

This week its Hector Plasm by Benito Cereno and Nate Bellegarde as chosen by Kansas. I’m a big fan of Nate’s work and have read both Hector Plasm De Mortuis and Hector Plasm Totentatz. Not really my cup of tea but the art is killer.
